DO YOU KNOW? Safety tips for Home Electrical
Always hire a licensed electrician: Electrical work is highly regulated and complex. Never attempt DIY electrical repairs or installations. Licensed professionals ensure safety and compliance with Canadian Electrical Code standards.
Regular electrical system inspections: Have a licensed electrician inspect your home’s electrical system every 5–10 years, or when purchasing an older home. Inspections help identify overloaded circuits, outdated wiring, and other hazards.
Recognize and replace outdated wiring: Homes built before the 1970s may have knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, which can be fire hazards. Upgrade wiring to modern standards to prevent risks.
Install safety devices: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are required in areas prone to moisture like bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoors to prevent electrical shocks. Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) protect against electrical fires in living areas.
Avoid overloading circuits: Flickering lights, warm outlets, or frequently tripped breakers may signal overloaded circuits. Spread out your appliance use and upgrade your electrical panel if it is older than 25 years.
Use certified electrical products: Always buy electrical equipment and appliances that carry recognized Canadian certification marks (e.g., CSA seal). Uncertified products may pose safety hazards.
Practice safe usage of cords and plugs: Check cords regularly for frays or damage and replace promptly. Never remove the third prong of plugs, and avoid running cords under carpets or through doorways.
